Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Chief Operating Officer (COO) to join our team and report directly to the owner. In this role, you will oversee the successful execution of our quarterly business plans, guiding the day-to-day operations of the firm to achieve our growth, revenue, and profitability goals. Your leadership will involve a wide range of responsibilities, including administration, personnel management, financial oversight, facilities management, and business systems.
As COO, you will collaborate closely with the owner and key staff to develop strategies, formulate policies, solve problems, and make informed decisions. We are looking for a candidate who has successfully managed an annual budget of $9 million to $25 million and led a team of 22 to 50 people, with the autonomy to hire and fire.

Responsibilities:
Execute Business Plans: Implement the firm's business strategies to meet quarterly revenue and profitability targets by effectively managing all aspects of the business.
Performance Evaluation: Analyze and interpret data and metrics to evaluate performance.
Staff Management: Supervise non-lawyer support staff and vendors, overseeing recruitment, hiring, onboarding, and performance evaluations.
Policy Oversight: Ensure the firm's policies and procedures are well-documented, organized, deployed, and regularly audited.
Financial Management: Work closely with the bookkeeping team to review monthly financial reports and guide ongoing tax planning with CPAs.
Team Management: Employ best practices to manage diverse team structures, including in-person, remote, hybrid, and contract staff.
Operational Security: Maintain a fully functional and secure digital environment for the entire team.
Risk Mitigation: Conduct ongoing risk assessments to minimize exposure.
Project Management: Successfully design and manage projects by leveraging process owners and strategic tasks within set timelines.
Promote Positive Culture: Demonstrate effective leadership strategies to foster a positive work environment that retains talent and attracts top candidates.
Qualifications:
Degree in management, business administration, human resources, or a related field.
Prior experience running a professional services firm or a division of a mid-sized or large professional services firm with an annual budget of at least $9 million (law firm experience is a plus but not required).
SHRM or HRCI certifications are beneficial.
Familiarity with ScalingUp is a plus.

Experience designing, monitoring, and reconciling a budget of $9 million or more.

Proficiency in designing, executing, and achieving business plans.
Ability to use key financial reports to drive business performance.
Knowledge of leadership management best practices and workflow systems.

Strong leadership capabilities, including recruiting, developing, and retaining team members while ensuring compliance with federal and state HR laws.

Experience opening new locations and managing multiple sites effectively.
